I took my brother-in-law to the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the campus of UT-Austin yesterday. You can see my artsy-fartsy pictures over on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but here are a couple shots of LBJ's limo. This is not, however, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! he used during his term in office. LBJ ordered this one in 1968 to carry him around Austin after he left office, so it doesn't have all the armor plating, bullet-proof glass, etc. that became the norm after JFK, LBJ's predecessor, was assassinated. It does, however, have the full suite of communications gear and a television.

Question, opponauts: Were Ford & GM at each other's throats over getting to supply these vehicles? And are they now? Or is it just business?

No idea. But it's an interesting question. After JFK's assassination, I would imagine there was a military-style procurement process that was undertaken to make the new, more secure limo. Or, in the interest of expediency, they may have just gone to one coach builder and said, "Make us one." This car, as well as the secure one, was converted by Chicago-based Lehmann-Peterson. It would make for an interesting article to trace the history of the development of these vehicles, leading up to "The Beast" we have today.

And yes it's my understanding that Ford and GM compete to get the contract.
Good summary of the different cars - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President…
